Low Power Mode helps extend your iPhone’s battery life by temporarily reducing background activity, automatic downloads, and certain visual effects.

Normally, your iPhone offers to enable it when the battery reaches 20%. But using Apple’s Shortcuts app, you can have Low Power Mode turn on automatically at a higher percentage, such as 40%.

Here’s how.

Set Up Automatic Low Power Mode

Apple’s Shortcuts app allows you to create automations that run when specific conditions are met.

For this automation, you’ll configure three things:

  • Trigger: Battery Level
  • Condition: Falls Below 40%
  • Action: Turn Low Power Mode On

On iOS 27

With iOS 27, you can use AI in Apple’s Shortcuts app to create an automation simply by describing what you want it to do.

Open Shortcuts, tap the plus button at the bottom of the screen, and enter the following prompt:

When my battery drops below 50%, it automatically turns on Low Power Mode and Dark Mode.

Submit the prompt, and Siri will create the automation for you.

Once it’s generated, review the settings to make sure everything looks correct. You can also tap the Play button to test it.

That’s it! Your iPhone will now automatically enable Low Power Mode and Dark Mode whenever your battery drops below 50%.

On iOS 26 and Earlier

If you’re using an older version of iOS, you can create the same automation manually. It takes a few more steps, but the result is identical.

First, create the shortcut:

  1. Open Apple’s Shortcuts app.
  2. Select the Shortcuts tab (bottom-left).
  3. Tap + to create a new shortcut.
  4. Search for and add the Set Low Power Mode action and configure it to turn Low Power Mode On.
  5. Search for and add the Set Appearance action and configure it to turn Dark Mode On.
  6. Rename your shortcut. For example, Low Power Mode.

Next, create the automation:

  1. Select the Automation tab (bottom-center).
  2. Tap New Automation or +.
  3. Choose Battery Level.
  4. Set the battery threshold to 50%.
  5. Select Falls Below.
  6. Choose Run Immediately.
  7. Tap Next.
  8. Find and select the shortcut you just created.
  9. Save your automation.

Your iPhone will now automatically run both actions whenever its battery drops below 50%.

Bonus: Add Low Power Mode to Control Center

You can also add a Low Power Mode button to Control Center for quick manual access.

  1. Swipe down from the upper-right corner of your screen.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area.
  3. Tap Add a Control.
  4. Search for Low Power Mode and add it.

You can now turn Low Power Mode on or off without opening Settings.

A Few Things to Know

Low Power Mode turns off after charging. Your iPhone automatically disables it when the battery reaches 80% or higher.

Your iPhone still works normally. You can continue making calls, sending messages, and using apps. Some background activities and display features are temporarily limited.

It doesn’t improve battery health. Low Power Mode conserves your existing charge; it doesn’t restore lost battery capacity.

Once your automation is configured, your iPhone will automatically enable Low Power Mode whenever the battery falls below your chosen threshold.
